What do we do?
As consultant paediatricians, we are trained in the health care of children from newborn to age 18 years. In order to access our services, a referral is required from your primary care doctor or family doctor, for an appointment to be booked. Generally we are booking appointments within 1-2 months of the referral being received, with the exception of behaviour/development (which may be longer), however, more urgent appointments can be made if necessary. Depending on the reason for the referral, initial consultations are booked for 45-60 minutes. The paediatrician will then decide on the need for follow-up appointments and how frequently those should be booked. In most cases, patients seen in our office should continue to be followed by their primary care doctor, for their ongoing care. If the patient does not return for follow-up within one year of the initial consultation, a new referral will be required. At times, you may encounter medical students, nursing students and/or medical residents doing rotations through our office. These students and doctors are supervised by one of the paediatricians, but often will see patients on their own.
A dietician consultation (not covered by OHIP), can be arranged through our office. Many third-party insurance companies will cover part or all of this cost.
A pharmacy is conveniently located within the Superstore, should you need to have a prescription filled after your appointment.
X-ray & Lab services
Our walk-in clinic runs most Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights (September through May), and Monday and Wednesday nights (June through August). Hours are 5:30-8:30 pm. It is a good idea to call in advance to confirm hours of operation. Wait times may be long, and we reserve the right to close the doors to patients if the clinic is over capacity. The clinic is for assessment and treatment of acute illnesses only. We do not provide immunizations, well-baby checks, flu shots or see children for long-standing chronic conditions such as behaviour problems. Please see your primary care doctor for these concerns, as a referral to our office could be considered as an alternative to the walk-in clinic. If you or your child has a communicable disease such as chicken pox, please advise the receptionist upon arrival, as you may be placed in a examination room until being seen, to avoid potential spreading of the infection to others in the waiting room.
Flu shots are generally available every year in October. These are provided free-of-charge, to our patients only, however not during walk-in hours.
We do not have X-ray or laboratory services in our clinic. However several labs and X-ray offices are located within a 5-10 minute drive from the Kinderclinic. Downtown Whitby has 2 X-ray labs near Dundas St. and Brock St., as well as the Taunton Medical Clinic on Taunton Rd. in Oshawa. Labs are located also in these same locations.
