Influenza update - "The Flu"
Happy Fall to everyone. As the seasons and the weather changes, we all know that means that cold and flu season will be upon us very soon. In order to keep your family as healthy as possible this fall and winter, we strongly urge you to consider getting a flu shot for your children. The "flu" or influenza, is a viral illness that is most commonly seen through the fall and winter seasons in Canada. Influenza symptoms range from fever, cough, congestion to body aches and pains and general fatigue. Influenza or "the flu" does not generally cause vomiting or diarrhea. The most susceptible people are younger children and older adults, who can become severely ill with this infection. As well, it is important to protect yourself and family members if you have someone in your family who is under the age of 6 months, pregnant, elderly or has a serious medical condition such as cancer. Therefore getting protection from the vaccine is your best option. The flu shot can be given to anyone over the age of 6 months. If you are under the age of 9 years, and have never had the flu shot before, you would need 2 shots this season, separated by 1 month.
The flu vaccine should be available at our office within the next few weeks, so please call the office to book your appointment as soon as possible. It takes about 2 weeks to develop full immunity, so the sooner you get it the better. There is no specific treatment for the flu once you have it. And although it may not offer 100% protection from getting the flu, some protection is better than no protection.
